Introduction by Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro, artistic director of Capuchos Music Festival
Welcome to the 2022 edition of the Capuchos Music Festival!
After a silence of two decades, the Capuchos Music Festival was "reborn" in 2021, with renewed vigour and artistic excellence, in a return, hailed nationally and internationally, that redeems its place as a cultural event of reference and its enthusiastic public, which, despite the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, sold out most of the concerts. Artists of the highest calibre, such as Alfred Brendel, Hopkinson Smith, Sergei Nakariakov, Viviane Hagner and Alexander Kantorow, among many others, were present and brightened the 2021 edition, setting the tone of excellence for a future of new challenges, (re)discoveries and fascinations.
We have arrived, then, to 2022, inspired by this legacy and excited with the construction of another link in this infinite and beautiful chain that is Art: ex nihilo nihil fit, nothing comes from nothing... And so we open – and close – the 2022 Festival with one of the most mythical and iconic compositions in Western music: the Goldberg Variations, by Johann Sebastian Bach. A work of absolute beauty and complexity, which someone described as "a Rubik's cube of invention and architecture", the Goldberg Variations are performed throughout the Festival in three moments and in three versions - harpsichord, piano and string trio - which take the form of the Festival’s Prelude, Interlude and Postlude. Circular music, without beginning or end... the Goldberg Variations are a supreme artistic manifestation of continuity, of eternity, of universality.
The 2022 programme of the Capuchos Festival is especially filled with various monographic concerts, which allow us to travel through several creative facets and (re)discover works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert and Fernando Lopes-Graça.
As a preamble to the musical journeys of the Capuchos Festival, and in order to associate the evocation of the written word to the expressive power of music, the Capuchos Talks cycle is, in 2022, dedicated to three important literary anniversaries of this year: the 450th anniversary of the publication of The “Lusíadas”, by Luís Vaz de Camões, whose Talk is followed by a concert dedicated to what would be Camões' "sonovision" of his time, the places he passed through and the environments he frequented; and the centenaries of the birth of Agustina Bessa-Luís and of the death of Marcel Proust, whose concert following the Talk outlines a panoramic journey through French chamber music "accompanied" by the great music lover that was Proust.
Several international first class ensembles and musicians are present in the 2022 edition of the Capuchos Music Festival. Among them, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra stands out, considered one of the main chamber orchestras in the world, as well as musicians renowned for decades, such as the harpsichordist Pierre Hantaï, the viola player Gérard Caussé, who returns to the Capuchos more than 30 years later, the pianist Konstantin Lifschitz or the Argentinean bandoneonist based in New York Héctor Del Curto, among others.
Also noteworthy is the participation of some of today's most sought-after and exciting young musicians, winners of major world competitions, such as Ukrainian violinist Diana Tishchenko, Grand Prix Jacques Thibaud at the legendary Long-Thibaud-Crespin International Competition in Paris (2018), the Russian pianist Anna Tsybuleva, First Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition (2015), and the French cellist and conductor Victor Julien-Laferrière, winner of the famous Queen Elisabeth of Brussels Competition (2017), in what was the first edition in history dedicated to the cello.
On a national level, I would like to highlight with enthusiasm the presence of the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the DSCH - Shostakovich Ensemble, the Sete Lágrimas and the traditional Mirandese music group Galandum Galundaina. This last group will present a concert dedicated to the music of Terras de Miranda/Nordeste Transmontano, in a strand dedicated to other musical genres that the Capuchos Festival embraces and which is also manifested in the concert dedicated to the universe of tango, with a special focus on the music of Astor Piazzolla.
Last but not least, a moment of gratitude and homage to António Wagner Diniz, co-founder of the Capuchos Festival, in partnership with the late José Adelino Tacanho who admirably continued and directed the "adventure" in which they both set off at the beginning of the 80's of last century. This is a "Carte Blanche" concert to António Wagner Diniz, who conceived an original event with the participation of a range of young and talented singers, his disciples, and in which, in his words, "he intends to fulfil two rituals, that of handing the baton and that of farewell". I return to Bach and his Goldberg Variations, music without beginning or end, a genial testimony of infinite continuity…
Thank you to all those who make the Capuchos Music Festival possible, especially to the City Council of Almada, promoter of this praiseworthy initiative, and to the Main Patron of the Festival, BPI/Fundação "la Caixa", so that we may celebrate life united by Music!
