Festival and Academy CLASSICAL SUMMER - Lisbon International Music Academy is a project with artistic and pedagogical direction by Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro that includes a performative axis and an educational axis, namely the Festival, with daily concerts, and the Instrument and Chamber Music Masterclasses.
The fourth edition of CLASSICAL SUMMER - Lisbon Internacional Music Academy was held from the 29th of July to the 7th of August 2018, at Centro Cultural de Belém. It included daily concerts and Masterclasses with the participation of 12 musicians and teachers of great reputation, from some of the most prestigious international teaching institutions such as Berlin, London, Paris, Lucerne, Rome or Brussels.
After 151 participants in 2017, 170 young musicians were selected for the 2018 edition. 107 Portuguese and 63 coming from 28 countries: Germany, USA, Japan, Spain, United Kingdom, Israel, New Zealand, Brazil, Finland, the Netherlands, Iceland, Belgium, Latvia, Croatia, China, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Cape Verde, Austria, Ireland, Lithuania, Guinea Bissau, South Korea, Russia, Bulgaria, France and Switzerland – which represented 15% more participants than in 2017.
Between July 29th and august 7th, CLASSICAL SUMMER Festival presented concerts with great works from the 18th to the 21st centuries: four MasterFest concerts, with the presence of internationally acclaimed musicians, as well as six TalentFest concerts, with the CLASSICAL SUMMER young participants, already awarded nationally and/or internationally.
This edition of 2018 wass highlighted by the debut of great pianists Imogen Cooper and Aleksandar Madžar, hornist Radek Baborák, considered by many the best hornist of the present time, the fantastic cellist Adrian Brendel, flutist Adriana Ferreira, recently named 1st Solo Flute of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia of Rome, double bassist Janne Saksala, world reference of his instrument and 1st Solo Double Bass of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. As usual, there were musicians who gave us the honor to repeat their presence, such as extraordinary violinists Corey Cerovsek and Jack Liebeck and violist Isabel Charisius, great clarinetist Pascal Moraguès, 1st solo clarinet of the Orchestra of Paris since 1981, and the “totalists” of the four editions of CLASSICAL SUMMER, celebrated cellist Gary Hoffman and the festival’s artistic and pedagogical director, the pianist Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro.
Mozart and Shostakovich were the most highlighted composers at the MasterFest concerts of the Festival CLASSICAL SUMMER 2018. With Mozart, we opened and closed the Festival, respectively with the Quintet for horn and strings and the Quintet for clarinet and strings. Shostakovich was present at all concerts, in tune with the CD album pre-release, in CLASSICAL SUMMER 2018, of the 1st world recording of the Complete Chamber Music for Piano and Strings by the DSCH - Shostakovich Ensemble. We marked the centenary of the death of Claude Debussy with the second half of the opening concert dedicated to the great French composer. Also noteworthy were masterpieces by Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and Dvořák.
The performative axis of CLASSICAL SUMMER, which includes the Festival concerts, is complemented by the educational axis, the Masterclasses, which are open lessons on technique and musical interpretation. After 380 lessons in 2017, there were more than 430 lessons of eight instruments (piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet and horn) and chamber music.
CLASSICAL SUMMER Masterclasses were oriented by 12 teachers, of 9 nationalities, and take place simultaneously in several halls of Centro Cultural de Belém, with the collaboration of various accompanist pianists. For practice and rehearsals, there are
25 rooms in Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra for young musicians. The Masterclasses are intended for music students, professional musicians, music teachers and listeners. There were around 20 pianos available for teachers and students during the Festival.
In 2018, CLASSICAL SUMMER presented a new cross-disciplinary field exploring the relations between Music and Science, in order to establish innovative symbioses and stimulate the capacities of reflection and critical thinking, aiming to the enrichment of the participants and of the audience. Scientist Maria José Lourenço, Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon opened this new field with the lecture “Chemistry of Music and Composer-Chemist Alexander Borodin”.
With the aim of decentralizing and extending the event to other regions, CLASSSICAL SUMMER went to Bragança and, on June 21st and 22nd, presented a concert, at the Municipal Theater, and open lessons of piano, violin, cello, double bass and chamber music for the region’s young musicians.
CLASSICAL SUMMER 2018 included, once again, sessions of Alexander Technique by Alexander Olschewski, from Berlin, enhancing body consciousness and balance.
All participants in the Masterclasses are candidates for CLASSICAL SUMMER Awards, whose jury was composed by the Masterclasses teachers. These prizes, in the form of concerts included in musical seasons held in Portugal, have an important role of motivation and recognition of talent and the participation by the young musicians during CLASSICAL SUMMER. Some of the young musicians awarded in previous editions already had the opportunity to present themselves as soloists with the three Portuguese regional orchestras – Orquestra do Norte, Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras and Orquestra Clássica do Sul – and in the 2018 edition of the Marvão International Music Festival.
CLASSICAL SUMMER assumes itself as an unique artistic and pedagogical initiative in Portugal, a project of cultural excellence open to all audiences.
